Laptop ports are in the middle of a big change. Normal USB ports(which is technically called USB-A) are now getting replaced by USB-C type port, which is the reversible version of the standard USB port and is becoming default ports. These USB-C are able to handle data, power, video output and more that too at USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt speeds. The problem that arises is with connecting TV or monitor or use any of the existing accessories, from your memory stick to external hard drives, an adapter is required. USB-C is going to be the future, but at least for now most of us will have to wait for a while for USB-C to be a hit.
Still, if you are not ready for a mono-port future, USB 3.0 is a good alternative to have because it has an HDMI output. Ethernet jacks for a wired internet connection have disappeared (gaming laptops still do, however), and even those micro SD slots that were very popular have faded away with upgraded technology. Honestly, between Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, we use ports a lot less when compared to older times, so don’t get worried about them unless you have a specific need for them.
A good example of something specific is using a virtual-reality headset like the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift. For those, you’ll need an HDMI output and even you might need up to 3 or 4 USB ports for the same.
