Learn as much as you can about your cultural identity. Speak to family members; do research at your local library or via the Internet or find a meeting or community of people to discuss your culture with. Research the foods, music and traditions that define your culture. Information is a strong weapon in protecting and enhancing your cultural identity.
Cultural identity is the identity of a group or culture or of an individual as far as one is influenced by one’s belonging to a group or culture. Cultural identity is similar to and overlaps with, identity politics.
Rather than necessarily representing an individual’s interaction within a certain group, cultural identity may be defined by the social network of people imitating and following the social norms as presented by the media. Accordingly, instead of learning behaviour and knowledge from cultural/religious groups, individuals may be learning these social norms from the media to build on their cultural identity
Join or form a cultural group in your clan. This is a chance for you and other group mate of your culture to meet and openly discuss what you guys feel about your cultural identity. Set a day and time each week to meet for coffee and snacks , in that time discuss what are things happening around you how your culture is affected by them , how you could save it , give equal chance to every member to participate in the discussion.
Learn to cook a few of your culture’s signature cuisine. Commit yourself to serving one of these dishes each week to your family. This is your chance to explain to your social group the importance and the beauty of the ingredients and dish in your culture. Eating ethnic and cultural food can also preserve your culture same as speaking the language.
Attend or organize a festival or parade celebrating your culture. Many cultures are now recognized with a month of the year, and some towns will hold celebrations to honour these cultures during that time. Be an active part of these celebrations to protect and maintain your cultural identity.
Visit your native place, if time and funding permits. There is no greater way to learn about your culture and solidify your cultural identity than to experience it firsthand.
Cherish your cultural identity every day by living your culture and being proud. Dress in ethnic clothing, eat cultural food, dress traditionally whenever possible, discuss traditions, norms your openly. Being progressive is sign of alive culture, keep your culture alive.
