How to Get College Students to Vote?

Participation in the electoral process by voting is the cornerstone of the democratic system. Unfortunately, getting college students interested in the voting process has always been a challenge. Students must understand that their votes matter and can change the course of history.
Instructions

1. Make the voting process personal to the student. In other words, show the student how governmental policy affects their everyday lives and their vote can change the people making up those policies.
2. Educate the college student on close elections throughout history that came down to a few thousand or even a few hundred votes. This is important because the student generally thinks that one vote will not make a difference.
3. Show the college students the historical struggle for the right to vote. If the student sees what sacrifices others have made for the right to vote this can greatly influence their voting habits.
4. Have voting information parties that are a social event and fun–this can help the students learn more about how their vote matters.
5. Establish voting information centers on campus. Students often have breaks between classes or live on campus. Therefore, setting up a voting information center on campus will give you the easiest access to the most college students.
6. Hand out and post flyers throughout campus on the voting process and how much a difference each vote makes in an election.
7. Find campus organizations and enlist their help in getting college students to vote. Most every campus has a student government and other organizations that can be useful tools to get college students to vote.
